By: Shayla HarrisFormer Co-Founder and Editor of Ballistic Sounds. Chicago rapper Towkio ascends toward maximum flight performance with the release of Community Service 2! Given that Towkio announced the project only a few days before it dropped on July 8th, CW2! is a pleasant surprise. As track 4— “G W M” (Gang With Me) — suggests, Towkio puts his squad, Savemoney, on with features from Joey Purp and Vic Mensa. However, the artist shines most alone when he tunes listeners in to his conscience on “Tear drop"
CW2! is wrought with high energy and spastic beats that make the EP hype and unpredictable. Towkio’s ability to deliver bars over powerful drum beats, reverberating synths and rich bass guitar chords is noteworthy. His flow grows and slows as the sounds shift, highlighting the artists’ potential to takeoff in many directions. Towkio is still in the process of finding his niche in hip hop or maybe even carving out his own. His versatility is shown not only through his adaptable flow, but also through the diverse musical influences and subject matters represented in the 23 minute EP. Soul samples, techno riffs, and house vibes pair with Towkio’s bars to bring stories of Chicago pride and tragedy, grinding, self-discovery, violence and greed to life. Though it is difficult to know exactly where Towkio might land, it’s clear this artist is going up. Community Service 2! can be streamed on Soundcloud or purchased on iTunes, but first fasten your seat belt and prepare for takeoff.
