By: Zoe Hines Founder of Ballistic Sounds. ATL native, PJ, released her debut album, Rare, in July. She is known for songwriting for big hip hop artists such as Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz, Wiz Khalifa, Tyga, and many more. PJ’s music career has been taking off since since she dropped her EP, Walking Around Pools, in 2015.
The last track on Rare titled “This is What It Looks Like” is a song that heightens listeners’ self confidence, reminding them that they can accomplish their goals through dedication and hardwork. PJ likely wrote this song as a message to herself. It reflects on her struggles with insecurity, and details the persistence that allowed her to take a big step forward to spark her career. PJ croons “this is what it look like, when you get up and you tired, and you still grind,” referencing how arduous work has opened her life up to endless possibilities. The personal lyrics are delivered over continuous celestial acoustic riffs. After PJ sings her last verse, the guitar persists for the remainder of the track. Listening to the instrumentals is as if we are taking a walk down memory lane, reminiscing with PJ on her journey as an artist. This track serves as a lesson. Regardless of people’s opinions, hard work pays off. PJ capitalizes on not letting outside beliefs stop her from running after her dreams and crossing the finish line. This track is special, as it sends a positive, inspirational message to anyone struggling. Listen to "This Is What It Looks Like" Here: soundcloud.com/justpeej/this-is-what-it-looks-like-1
