Eight cups a day. Southside Chicago rapper, Mick Jenkins, uses water as a symbol throughout his two most recent projects The Water[s] and Wave[s]. His lyricism and the extended metaphor of water in both his mixtape and E.P, set him apart from other up and coming rappers in the game. His symbolism of water as healing, truth, and clarity posit water as a healing element for the soul, body and mind in all aspects of life, while also touching specifically on black issues.
In anticipation of Mick Jenkins debut album that will drop later this year T]he [H]ealing [C]omponent, here are five songs from The Water[s] and Wave[s] that lucidly show the symbol of water as the ultimate “healing component”:
Mick Jenkins provides a tough, raw flow that compliments his recurring themes truth, healing and enlightenment with the symbol of water. Although his diction gets repetitive at times, he still delivers especially with catchy hooks that stay stuck in the listener’s head. His unique way of delivering a message delicately with his deep, smooth bass voice creates a unique sound and vibe that will be new for listeners.
