By: Funmi OnadipeFormer Co-Founder and Writer of Ballistic Sounds. This February, Philadelphia born artist Santigold graced the world with another unworldly album titled 99¢ .
99¢ ’s sound is an acquired taste with a mix of alternative, hip hop, pop, techno and indie rock that entices the listener to really see what Santigold is about. The electricity in her mezzo- soprano voice compliments the high intensity, hypnotic synth melodies that are especially heard in “Walking in a Circle”, “Run The Races”, and “Banshee”. Santigold delivers harmonic rich vocals rather than focusing on the content of her lyrics. Her vocals are filled with echoes and synth effects that make her sound extraterrestrial, giving her the originality that she is known for. Her ability to infuse so many different genres together in one album and in turn create an organized sound is commendable and makes her unique. The 6th song on the album, “Who Be Lovin’ Me” featuring Atlanta based rapper, ILOVEMAKONNEN, is a finely calibrated, alternative hip-hop tune that has a catchy chorus. Together, Santigold and ILOVEMAKONNEN create a playful, sing-songy vibe that does not get annoying after the first verse and stays stuck in the listener’s head all day. Although most of the album is filled with upbeat tunes, there are a few songs where she demonstrates her strong vocals over mesmerizing percussion that give off tribal vibes like “Before the Fire” and “Walking in a Circle”. These songs are the epitome of out of this world and will intoxicate the listener with mythical sounds that they will not be able to find in other artists. Santigold’s uniqueness is dynamic and extremely entertaining. Even if the listener doesn’t vibe with her sound, they will be delightfully perplexed by the complexity of her music and will, without a doubt, find her ethereal.
