By: Zoe Hines Founder of Ballistic Sounds. Arizona hip hop trio, Injury Reserve, consists of Ritchie with a T, Stepa J Groggs, and producer Parker Corey. They dropped their second album, Floss, two days ago. If you’re looking for exhilaration mixed with cool, calm and collected, Injury Reserve is your spirit animal. Here are three tracks off the album that BallisticSounds vibes with:
1.“Oh Shit!!!” The first track off the album introduces a piano melody, but quickly adds a hype beat for an exciting start of an album. Parker Corey fuses alternative beats with jazz melodies, creating a distinct sound. Ritchie with a T continues the build up with his hot verse explaining their creation of a new genre known as “spazz rap” and memories of having rhymes in a notebook. Stepa J Groggs slides in after the exciting chorus, spitting about how the type of music the trio has produced is what he used to bump when he was younger. Ritchie and Stepa compare old memories to their development as stronger rappers and the new style they developed. 2. “All This Money” This track is not only about the paper, but also their growing popularity. Ritchie and Steppa hint at the idea of money revolving around the image of hip hop. Ritchie raps “I ain’t got much but I’ll make a nigga fresh yeah.” Money doesn’t fall from the sky at the start of fame. Ritchie will use what he has to better his “swag”, but also spend on logical expenses. Stepa jumps on the next verse describing “You know how it goes if you got it better spend it, and if you ain’t got it I suggest you go and get it.” Your passion over money in the beginning, but you still need to receive money for dedication. Ritchie raps about the beginning of growth, while Stepa spits about the feelings evoked by great achievements. Parker Corey yet again comes in clutch with a uplifting sound. 3. “Keep on Slippin” featuring Vic Mensa This track is different from most of the songs on the album. It is slower and touches on emotional aspects of life. The intro of the track is steady with Ritchie’s repetitive lyrics “I keep on slipping, I just keep on sleeping”, which reoccur throughout the track. Parker Corey slows down his usual fast tempo beats to match up with Ritchie, Stepa and Vic’s poignant lyricism . Stepa hits the first verse, discussing his inner struggles. He has helped others to improve, but can’t find ways to do the same for his own life. Vic is featured, introducing dark realizations about his mental issues. He delineates his problems by comparing them to the movie Hitch and Erykah Badu’s track “On & On”. This relatable track causes us to ponder about grappling with our own difficulties. Floss is available on SoundCloud and Spotify!
